What is really like to visit Alaska in the winter?
What is really like to visit Alaska in the winter?

Sometimes the stereotypes about winter in the land of Alaska prove to be true as the thermometers often show negative temperatures. There is a local myth that says that once it was so cold in Fairbanks that a tire that fell from a truck broke immediately into pieces.

The winter storms in the Gulf of Alaska and other coastal areas often hit the shore with very strong waves and torrential rains. Near the Arctic Circle, the inhabitants are forced to make the engines work all around the winter, otherwise their cars would no longer be moving.  Also, beyond the Arctic Circle, a region representing about one third of the territory of Alaska, the sun never rises in the winter, while the southern regions receive only 5-6 hours of light with each rotation of the Earth.

However, this extreme weather applies more to the peripheral regions. Most of the cold season, the weather is tolerable in Alaska. The average January temperature is in the state capital, Anchorage, of only -4 °C. Not so different from the European or other US States.

Winter in Alaska has much to offer to the visitors! Perhaps the most beautiful weather phenomenon in the world can be seen in this region this time of year. It is the Aurora Borealis, shining in the sky in huge rivers of light that constantly changes its colors. Among the regions of the state, Fairbanks is the place that offers the most beautiful spots to observe the northern lights. The tourist operators in the area offer heated rooms with glass walls from where visitors can admire the lights.
