East Africa was declared the most popular tourism destination in the 12th edition of Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism by UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). East Africa had as main competitors more than 109 wordwide destination from almost all the continents. Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia, they all had competed to gain this award. The results were announced in the magnificent award ceremony in Madrid, Spain, with 17 selected finalists.
Tourism in East Africa not only proved it can find permanent solution and management efficiency but also that The East Africa Tourism Platform aligns to the extremely important principle of today's society: sustainability. This platforms includes regions and countries such as Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.
The reward was also awarded for its policies, marketing and tourism servicies and efforts. All of these made of East Africa an important player in the tourism market that worth an award of expreme importance.
Carmen Nibigira, the EATP Regional Co-ordinator, declared on behalf of the five East African countries receiving the award:
“We are one people, but with a rich cultural diversity that needs to be tapped and harnessed for the benefit of developing tourism and our economies at large.
“Through this tool, regional tourism stakeholders have started trading each other’s products, packaging tourism products without borders, bench-marking among themselves and learning from each other.”
Also, East Africa will attend the ITP Berlin tourism expo this year, during 9-13 March in Berlin, Germany.
